    Supervisor: Lacy Handwerk, SLP

About the Supervisor: I have been an SLP for 5 years working primarily in adult acute care with PRN work in LTACH, IRF/IPR, and home health. My favorite populations are dysphagia and trach. I am trained in MBS/VFSS, FEES, and MDTP (though my certification in the latter has lapsed). I strive to stay up-to-date on research and implement EBP in my daily clinical practice. When I was in grad school, I knew I wanted to work in acute care with adults but didn't feel listened to by my practicum coordinator, who continuously tried to convince me to work in the pediatric world. I know acute care placements are difficult to find, especially after Covid, so I want to offer a place for students to learn and gain experience in their desired setting.

About the Placement: The caseload is primarily assessment of dysphagia with speech, language, and cognition. Swallowing treatment is frequent with some aphasia, dysarthria, and cognitive treatment. Voice patients are rare other than intubation-related injuries. You will gain experience on the ICU, neuro, trauma, cardiac, and med-surg units, learn to communicate with providers from various specialties, and work with populations including post-extubation, cardiac surgery, trachs, head and neck cancer, and neurologic diagnoses, among others. You will be trained to complete MBS/VFSS and to interpret FEES studies. Acute care has a flexible schedule based on patient needs, requires the clinician to be flexible and adaptable as well, and involves multidisciplinary collaboration among hospitalists, ICU doctors, surgery teams, neurologists, ENTs, nurses, RTs, PTs, and OTs, among others.

    Contact: My email- lhandwerk@kh.org

Student Requirements: In the initial email, include the type/length of your placement and why you want a placement in acute care. Once I receive your email, you will be directed to the student placement coordinator for our health system's rehab services, who will request your resume, cover letter, and other information. If you are interested in pediatric acute care/NICU or adult/pediatric OP, I can send your email along as well because we do have those opportunities.

    Open to student observation: No

Dates Available: Fall or spring, preference for full-time internships due to the setting. I am unable to accept summer placements.

  • Magic Valley Medical Center (Outpatient)

About the Supervisor: I’ve been an SLP for about 4.5 years and have been at my current job for 2.5 years. I’m very laid back and easy going (type B personality). • Outpatient- Rural Hospital

    Population: Pediatrics- Bilingual

    Supervisor: Shaundra Cook MA CCC-SLP

About the Supervisor: I am a bilingual SLP who works in a rural hospital in Sunnyside, WA, which is in central Washington about 45 minutes from Tri-Cities. I work primarily with birth to 5 population, but also see Spanish speaking adults occasionally for cognitive therapy or bedside swallow evaluations. I went to the University of Oregon where I was part of the first “Inicio” bilingual program, and I have specific skills related to caregiver coaching in Spanish. I’m also very passionate about getting high-tech aac devices into the hands of my patients with complex communication needs. This past year, I have helped three different children get eye-gaze communication devices through insurance. I love to learn and help other’s learn, and I just finished having my first grad student placement. It brought out a new element of our career that I really unexpectedly enjoyed, and I feel like that sort of collaborating and training adds value to my own practice and (hopefully) my student as well.

About the Placement: Caseload varies widely, mostly pediatrics, and 80% Spanish speaking. I see 8-10 patients in a 10 hour day, and I work 4 10s. I sometimes have to see inpatient adults for bedside swallow evaluations, and I enjoy keeping my skills sharp. In rural healthcare you have to be willing to do anything needed, so I find myself doing all sorts of things throughout the week.

    Contact: Linkedin, or shaundracook@yahoo.com

Student Requirements: Short, informal interview- possibly in person to see the facilities if you are local! Would always prefer bilingual in Spanish students just because most of our patients are Spanish-speaking, but it’s not a dealbreaker!

I have experience in voice as well - one of my clinical placements was in a voice center within a large medical center. My medical background includes SNF, outpatient, and inpatient rehab. I'm on LinkedIn if you want to look more into my experience!

About the Placement: I work part-time for Prismatic, approx 5-10 hrs per week, with clients of all genders who are seeking gender affirming voice services. My caseload waxes and wanes per week with cancellations/discharges. My clients are typically on M, Tu, Th, and F, as well as W evenings (EST).

Student Requirements: For this placement, I would preferably prioritize (self-identified) trans* students, with second priority to cisgender queer students and BIPOC students.

Informal (no "professional" writing expectations, less than 1 page) cover letter and resume are preferred. If you are more comfortable with speaking than writing, I will definitely do an (informal) interview instead!
